Microgaming’s best boffins have put their heads together to try to better their hit slot Avalon with the newer Avalon II slot: The Quest for the Grail, a spruced up game that has embraced gaming 3D technology. This was quite a move away from more traditional games like the Bar Bar Black Sheep slot for Microgaming when it was launched, and it’s a trend that they have continued.
You will need to help King Arthur find the Grail and return it to the magical island of Avalon – which always makes me think of Monty Python, but rest assured- this game is just as much fun! This is a slot that is loaded up with 8 epic bonus features. It’s fascinating stuff for a qualified anthropologist like me.
The Graphics
Behind the reels is the landscape of the mythological isle of Avalon. Haunting statues with mist pouring from them on either side of the reels grace the game- this monkey would be on high alert while exploring these! The frame is made of decorative silver and gold and the background sounds are stirring stuff, with mystical piping and atmospheric music that reminds me of Scotland. It’s all a big step up from games like the Win Sum Dim Sum slot and King Cashalot, also from Microgaming!
Avalon II is taking no prisoners when it comes to the quality stakes: this game looks good enough to be on the big screen with a lot of detail to help transport you to the fantastical isle. The slot is packed with 3D animation that sets this game significantly ahead of a whole host of the slot competition.
The Play
Avalon II is 5 reel, 3 row and a 243 ways to win epic where you need to land matching icons left to right and they need to be on adjacent rows- the usual pay lines structure has been replaced by the ways to win mechanism which I am sure you have encountered before. The high value icons are the main characters in the legend of King Arthur: Arthur himself, Merlin, Guinevere, the evil Morgan and the looming Black Knight. The lower value icons are the Ace through 9 of the card deck in bright colours.
Avalon II’s Wild is the game’s logo, and there is a special Lady of the Lake Wild which lands on reel three that expands dramatically with a slightly spooky underwater animation- this can net you a nice win if your luck is in.
There is also a special silver grail icon, which unlocks the plentiful bonus features.
The Bonuses
In the base game alone there are an impressive two bonus features to get your winning streaks under way. There’s the Lady of the Lake expanding Wild on reel 3 which we have already touched on and then there’s the Merlin feature.
Merlin the Mystic appears – as if by magic – and awards you cash prizes or a multiplier. On a winning spin Merlin can award up to a x4 multiplier. If you fail to win on a spin that this man of magic comes into his own gifting a multiplier of between x4 and a stunning x20!
The Grail feature
Land three or more the grail icon and you will begin an adventure through a map of games. You need to progress through each section to succeed in your mission to return the grail to Avalon.
The first bonus is the Lake of Legend. You will find yourself underwater with a need to re-forge the famed sword Excalibur using the throw of a dice. This will pair sword fragments with the broken weapon. If you manage to mend the fragments of the sword within the allocated 10 spins you gain a mighty x15 your stake. My liege! That might just come my weapon of choice.
There is also the Misty Vale bonus. You will need to choose a character to become a temporary additional Wild, and this feature brings a x2 multiplier on a 15 free spins bonus.
Choose your next game from:
- The Whispering Woods bonus, which is a picking game with shields – you get three choices.
- The Forest Falls bonus which comes with 20 free spins and a special kind of Wild which grows down the reels and stays in place for a spin.

Avalon II is barn-storming epic with incredible visuals: all that animation will take your breath away, and that’s before you get to the bonuses! Even the base game offers a x20 multiplier which tells you that this game can deliver more than fantasy funds. This is a medium variance slot game that’s completely packed with features. This game has it all apart from a progressive jackpot- another classic from Microgaming.
