Well, if I’m not qualified to review this game then my name’s Arthur Dent. The Planet of the Apes slot is a game involving a collection of primates with coins to be won. Count me in. The theme, heavily based on the smash movie franchise, makes this game from NetEnt a sheer buzz. Let’s have a whirl on the reels, shall we? NetEnt are famous for their feature packed games like the Koi Princess slot and Guns n Roses, so let’s see if they hit the mark on the Planet of the Apes.
The Basics
Planet of the Apes is a joint effort between Twentieth Century Fox, the movie makers and NetEnt. It’s a bonus packed slot that pits mankind against apes (some of us are civilised!) Two movies, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes inspired this slot game which is a spliced up game version of the two. I couldn´t wait to get my hands on this online slot! NetEnt do a good movie slot (try the Jumanji slot if you don’t believe me) so we were expecting good things from this one.
The Graphics
Thanks to the team up between the movie and the game designers there are a host of features straight from the movie on the Planet of the Apes slot, with photos and even footage taking centre stage on the reels. This is probably the best looking game since the Forsaken Kingdom slot from Rabcat. It’s a real looker!
There’s a dramatic movie style soundtrack that accompanies the slot play that is great at building atmosphere and will have you sitting in anticipation on the very edge of your seat. Hail Caesar!
The Play
NetEnt has thrown out the slot rule book with this smasher of a game. This slot has a double set of reels that stand side by side and these “Dual Reels” impact game play significantly in the bonus games. Let me explain….
On the left are a set of reels themed by Rise on the left, and Dawn on the right.
Each set of reels contains five reels, 3 rows and 20 pay-lines- giving this game a massive 40 pay-lines of dosh making potential. Each reel set works independently until the bonus games start.
The early life of Caesar the ape is at the centre of the stories and is seen on the left hand reels. Naturally, Caesar is the highest value icon on those reels. He’s not alone though, as we have a trio of further characters featuring in the high value symbols. The lower value icons are the Ace through 10 of the card deck.
The Dawn reels are themed by Caesar’s life – as the ruler of the apes. As a result, the older Caesar and three human characters, as well as his nemesis Koba, the wicked ape, are the high value icons on the reels. Again, the Ace through ten of the card deck make up the low value symbols.
On each reel, the Wild is an entwined icon which is gold on the left hand side and red on the right. Only the bonus icons or Scatter substitute for the all-powerful Wilds. The Scatter is in both reels as the younger and older face of Caesar and the movie logo. Landing a handful of Scatters on either set of reels will boost your wallet by a welcome 1,000 coins. How very civilised!
The Bonuses
The Dual feature on the Planet of the Apes slot is a marvelous piece of slot innovation from NetEnt. Prior to making a spin in the base game, a single icon – different on each side on the reels is selected at random. Then the reels spin, and if further instances of that icon land, they will freeze in place increasing their win potential.
Cleverly, if that special icon lands on the opposing set of reels it can move over to the other set of reels to increase your cash making potential. The spinning continues until further special icons land on either reel set. And better still, in this mode there’s a 1,000 x your wager win potential! Now thing are looking up for primates everywhere!
Rise and Dawn Features
Landing the related bonus icon on the first reel on the left hand set, or the last reel or the right hand set will trigger the special movie themed features.
