The Graphics

The reels are set inside what looks like a wooden longship and the background is blue skies, soaring mountains, fir trees and the sea. Could it be the Norwegian Fjords? Most likely.

The graphics are not the HD animations we’ve been used to of late. In fact, they have more in common with the Asterix books than an online slot… But still, the design is entertaining and the soundtrack a suitably dramatic-sounding ditty.

The Play

Viking Pays slot has 5 reels, 3 rows and offers us 243 ways to win. This means if you land at least 3x matching symbols on adjacent reels from the leftmost reel, you’ll make a win. That´s pretty standard fare compared to something like the Christmas Aloha slot, but it’s no worse for it. We like a traditional game.

The betting range is on the lower side which is befitting of a low/medium variance slot. It starts at 0.20 and goes up up to 20.00 per spin.

Pay Table

As for the icons that adorn these Scandinavian reels, you can expect the symbols to all be related to viking culture. They include; Viking helmets, axes, the longship, drinking horns, an elaborate ring, a rune necklace and various shields painted with coloured vikings symbols.

The big angry-looking Viking is the wild icon here, and will use his might to substitute for any other symbols on the reels. Thus helping you make more winning combinations. He will land on reels 2, 3, 4 and 5.

The gold coin with the word ‘bonus’ on it is the scatter here, and it will set off the game’s main bonus feature.

The Bonuses

Re-Life Spins
This rather excellent feature is set off when you land 3x or more bonus symbols – but instead of spins – now you’ll be given lives. Intrigued? Yes, I thought you might be.

You will start the round with 3 lives and a multiplier between x2 and x5 – this depends on how many scatters you landed to trigger the feature 3x, 4x or 5x. But, you will lose a life with each non-win free spin that is taken. Make a win, and your lives will be reset to three again. Make sense?

Life Saver Spin
Each winning spin will also increase the win multiplier by 1x up to a maximum of 50x.  And when you get down to your last life, reel 3 will become fully wild and turn into a ‘Life Saver Spin’ to give you once final chance at winning. Now who said those Vikings were a heartless bunch?

The game will continue to give you spins indefinitely, just as long as you continue to scoop those winning combos. Which is just fine by me!

The Monkey Verdict

Like the Vikings themselves, Viking Pays slot is a riot to play. The graphics are not the best we’ve seen but the free spins are so exciting I’m prepared to overlook them. Unlimited spins with the possibility of a x50 multiplier has got me somewhat hot under the collar.

While I only managed to scoop a x10 – the potential is out there for a mammoth-sized win if you get very lucky, and there’s something rather exhilarating about that last chance spin…
